Finnish Meteorological Institute (
www.fmi.fi) is designated by Finnish government as national air quality expert with a mandate to produce information and forecasts on state of the atmosphere and its characteristics, serving needs of the public, industry and commerce, and contributing to scientific ends.
FMI monitors the state and composition of the atmosphere and develops and applies numerical models on atmospheric processes. The modelling teams have extensive experience in developing and implementing various numerical systems from urban to global scales. FMI has lead the POLLEN project where a unique integrated system for pollen release and transport has been developed. The system is in trial operational exploitation since 2005 and its results are presented in near-real-time at several national and international dissemination platforms, including the European Aeroallergen Network, portal of PROMOTE project of European Space Agency
http://www.gse-promote.org, and POLLEN project site
http://pollen.fmi.fi, FMI is involved in many international co-operative, research and assessment efforts in air chemistry and aerosol physics, atmospheric composition, etc. FMI is leading several networks within COST, in particular COST-ES0603 “Assessment of production, release, distribution and health impact of allergenic pollen in Europe”.
